Reconfiguring Brooklyn
A building frenzy has descended right beyond the borders of my historic Brooklyn neighborhood. For some ridiculous reason I thought the small area of open sky and green spaces around me would escape the onslaught of tall buildings that has consumed so many other areas. I can see, hear, and taste the construction. It is outside my windows, looming over my home and studio, and is greatly impacting the sky and urban landscape that I was so familiar with and took for granted. In response, I took this feeling of being besieged and made it the creative impetus for this current series of works, Reconfiguring Brooklyn.
I researched and found on the Internet several historical maps of Brooklyn, which I digitally downloaded and laser printed in black and white onto archival letter size paper. After I choose a map to work on I define the parameters of a color palette to use. Colors are chosen in response to each other, something I have seen, an experience, sensation, or even a challenge. I paint the overall shapes loosely following the grid, contours, and boundaries of the map, quickly deviating from the expected routes and outlines. I proceed with each work moving beyond the borders of the map into a journey of the unknown. I travel using pen and brush over, through, and in between roads, coastal areas and waterways making something that does not reflect what was the original map’s intent but becomes a metaphor about travel, urban planning, history, obstruction, change, and imagination. In formal terms these paintings are about a play of color, shape and line. On a social political level they reflect my observations, reactions, and concerns for the aesthetic violation that is happening around me.
