Filmmaker Lynne Sachs's collection of poems, one for each year from 1961 to 2011, began as a half-century marker in Sachs’ life. Reflecting on history and memory, the handwritten poems themselves became the basis for her film, Tip of My Tongue.
Designed by Abby Goldstein, Year by Year is the result of a deep collaboration between the author and designer. By showing the handwritten journal pages adjacent to the typeset poems, text set in the Study with the display set in Freight Sans, the relationship between content and form is realized. The author’s eccentrically lettered dates are isolated and collected on the book’s cover to create a cacophony of numbers that reflects the movement of time.

Co-designed with Neha Motipara. Union Settlement asked us to design an annual report that followed our previous years design. This year they wanted it folded into a functional calendar that highlighted stories and images.
